The American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is a nonprofit membership association of faculty and other academic professionals.

National AAUP Mission Statement

The mission of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is to advance academic freedom and shared governance; to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education; to promote the economic security of faculty, academic professionals, graduate students, post‐doctoral fellows, and all those engaged in teaching and research in higher education; to help the higher education community organize to make our goals a reality; and to ensure higher education’s contribution to the common good. Founded in 1915, the AAUP has helped to shape American higher education by developing the standards and procedures that maintain quality in education
and academic freedom in this country’s colleges and universities.

Towson University Faculty Association – TU AAUP

All members of the faculty at Towson University, at any rank and status, are automatically members of the Faculty Association and of the TU chapter of the AAUP.  At the local  and national levels, the AAUP advocates for faculty colleagues in all matters of shared governance, professional advancement, and academic values.  We encourage all faculty members to take an active role in this vital organization.

Issues of special importance to faculty at Towson University include:

  • Compensation and expectation for all stages of the career and profession
  • Transparency in expectations for promotion, tenure, and merit
  • Defending faculty rights in curriculum, peer review, and academic standards
  • Promoting an equitable and rational balance of teaching, scholarship, and service
  • Defending academic freedom and campus civility in a highly charged and polarized political
    context
  • Promoting faculty wellness.

The TU Faculty Association/AAUP is not a union.  State law bars public university faculty from collective bargaining.  On this campus we meet regularly with the Administration to present faculty perspectives on critical issues in a constructive, principled manner.
The higher the percentage of engaged, informed, dues-paying members of the Faculty Association, the stronger our collective voice.

The work of our faculty is a source of continual inspiration.  The TU AAUP encourages every single faculty member to participate actively in campus life, through leadership in committee work at all levels – department, College, and University, committees of the Academic Senate, and committees of the AAUP itself – as appropriate to the faculty member’s interests and skills.  Faculty can also help by recruiting departmental colleagues, and by keeping the TU AAUP apprised of issues and concerns as they arise.  We are stronger together.
