Although the origin of the idiom ‘tag along’ isn’t known, it first appeared in print in 1900. Its meaning, “follow along”, comes from the late 17th century, though the word ‘tag’ was first used as a noun in the 15th century. A related secondary meaning, “following persistently and closely” dates back to 1884.
