The Maryland Loaner Lab (MDLL) is a free resource for Maryland middle and high school science teachers that brings a variety
of investigations to the classroom. Each MDLL kit contains all the necessary reagents,
equipment, and curriculum needed for students to engage in inquiry-based activities
that support the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

All other kits are still available. You can reserve a kit by completing the MDLL Request Form.  A form must be completed for each kit.


Maryland teachers become qualified to borrow kits by completing the MDLL Training Workshop offered free of charge through the Center for STEM Excellence.

Program Details

Once eligible, kits are free and scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis and may be requested up to 10 months
in advance. Kits are on-loan for 14 days. They are available to individual teachers for use in their own classroom. We having a variety of kits designed for
both middle school (grades 6–8) and high school (grades 9–12) students which support Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

All About Your Kit


Our kits include a teacher’s manual that provides set-up instructions, student worksheets,
return shipping instructions and labels, and a return equipment checklist. It also
includes one class set, which has lab equipment and reagents for up to 10 student
workstations (serving up to 32 students).  Please note: Additional class sets are available upon request.


Teachers are allowed to borrow one kit at a time. They are not allowed to share a kit with other teachers. Kits need
to be scheduled at least three weeks prior to the borrow date. Reserve a kit using
the on-line MDLL Kit Request form.

You received your kit, now what? Immediately put red cold bags in a refrigerator.
Use the checklist to make sure you have all items listed. Also, check for any broken
materials or equipment. Notify us immediately if there are any problems.  


Time to return your kit? Start by cleaning and drying all equipment before packing.
Neatly package all items back into the box as they were received. Complete the enclosed
return checklist and note if items are missing or broken. Tape and put both shipping
labels on the outside of the box as directed. 

Kits are shipped to and from schools via FedEx at no cost. Two labels (return address
and FedEx tracking) for return shipping are included in each kit. To return the kit,
teachers schedule a FedEx pick-up using the directions provided. Please note:  Teachers also have the option to drop-off the kit at any FedEx location.


Please let us know in advance if you need to cancel your reserved kit. Please do so
by emailing us at mdll AT_TOWSON. Early cancellation will help us give other teachers the opportunity to book a kit.
