Dr. Roy teaches journalism and mass communication courses at Towson University. Previously,
she was a faculty member at the School of Media at Western Kentucky University where
she taught broadcast journalism. Her research focuses on are freedom of speech, media
and journalism in India, and women’s gender and sexuality studies. Her dissertation
examined how internet and social media censorship practices, such as content removal,
are employed by the United States and the Indian governments and whether such practices
contribute to an online spiral of silence. Dr. Roy has won several awards for her
research including the Top Debut Faculty Paper in 2018 from the Media Law and Policy
Division of AEJMC, and KTA Advisors Research Grant in 2019. 

Dr. Roy received her Ph.D. from the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at the Ohio
University. She also has seven years of reporting and producing experience with some
of the biggest media organizations in India. Dr. Roy was a reporter with The Times of India, which is the largest English language daily in the world. She also worked as a senior
producer with Radio City 91.1 FM.
