I found this internship through Google Search.

What advice on the internship application process would you give to another TU student
interested in this internship?

I would say be honest in your abilities and ask a lot of questions. I had experience
being a mentor, which made the position perfect for me since I was already aware of
how a program would run.

What did you do as an intern at this organization?

I worked alongside other employees to brainstorm ideas to revamp and expand the Anne
Arundel County mentoring program. I interviewed and trained volunteers, worked with
social workers, advertised the program, talked in the community on behalf of the program,
and monitored the volunteers as they mentored children in the child welfare system.

What did you find most rewarding in your internship?

I was really able to see my strengths and weaknesses and how much effort it takes
to get a program off the ground. Also, being able to connect a child with a mentor
based on their interest then hearing the progress they made and the connections that
sparked was amazing. Going through an entire process with a volunteer and then seeing
them be able to see that process through was very rewarding.

What were the challenges you faced in your internship?

It was a lot of work and the volunteers needed a lot of support. To volunteers in
the community, I was the face of the program and their main point of contact, so any
problem, stressors, or mishap was reported to me. Being somewhat new in a position
in which I would have to answer to volunteers was also difficult at times.

If another student at TU was interested in your internship next year, what skills
would you recommend they develop in the coming semesters to prepare?

I would suggest being a mentor yourself so that you better understand what it is like
to be in this leadership position. I would work on skills of professional communication,
public speaking, and being able to work independently to solve an issue.
