Brotherhood is truly an amazing bond. Brothers are our friends, bodyguards, rivals, and role models. Older or younger, it doesn’t really matter; brothers are there to help us be the best people we can. Having brothers is a truly unique experience, an experience that is hard to put into words. But I’ll try. Here are 15 things only people who have brothers would understand.
1). Brothers are your oldest, most reliable friends.
No matter what happens in life, we can always rely on our brothers to be there for us. They have been there from the minute you entered their life, and they’ll be there until the minute you die. Having brothers means we will always have that special bond that can never be broken.
2). Brothers won’t let you fight alone.
Having a brother or brothers means always having someone on our side when we need it. Bad foul in a pick-up game? Nasty rumor going around? Brothers are there to set things straight. Or at least help.
3). Brother let you fight alone (if you need to).
Sometimes brothers let us fight it out alone. Every once in a while we need to duke it out alone. Maybe we threw the first punch. Brothers know that sometimes we need to learn lessons the hard way.
4). Brothers make you want to be better.
Invariably, brothers have an ability to make you give that extra bit of effort. Maybe it’s a look, a saying, or a gesture they have. No matter what it is, when it happens, we have to do better.
5). Brothers make you laugh.
Even if we are having a horrible day, week, month, year, brothers know exactly what to say to make us laugh. Maybe they bring up a great memory, tell a lame joke, or do something so characteristically brotherly we can’t help but laugh. Whatever it is, they know just how to cheer us up.
6). Brothers try to establish dominance.
Everyone with a brother knows just what this one means. There is no such situation where a brother hasn’t put us in a headlock, destroyed us in a game of HORSE, or tied a noose around our favorite action figure and tossed it up in the oak tree. It all comes with having brothers.
7). Brothers test our limits.
They know exactly what to say or do to make us angry, but every once in a while they push us too far. They make us go berserk. The good thing about going berserk is that our brothers may never push us that far again. They know the consequences.
8). Brothers have no filter.
Every brother will have those moments where they tell us exactly what they think, no matter what. “Did the lawn mower give you a haircut?” or “I saw your fly was down, but didn’t want to say anything.” Sometimes they’ll make up something just for kicks. Brothers will say whatever comes to mind.
9). Brothers scheme.
Brothers always seem to have evil genius tendencies. They will hold your favorite possessions ransom. “Put all of you money in an envelope behind the toilet or you will never see your Gameboy again!”
10). Brothers give creative nicknames.
Every time we see our brothers, we either have a new nickname or are reminded of one that we thought died in the early 2000s. Sometimes they are totally unrelated to anything at all, but they make them work.
11). Brothers are role models.
At some point in our lives, we realize that our brothers are our role models. We model our fashion, language, jokes, and activities after our brothers. We ask them their opinion on significant others, which schools and careers we should look into, and what is the meaning of life.
12). Brothers eat fast.
Dinner, supper, lunch, brunch, elevensies, or fourth meal. It doesn’t matter what meal it is, brothers race to finish first. And we can forget about that last slice of pizza we wanted for lunch tomorrow. Odds are that brother dearest ate, bit, or licked it to claim it for his own.
13). Brothers change the rules.
There is no point in actually trying to beat your brothers in anything. The rules, if not established in writing, agreed to under oath, and sanctioned with a blood pact, will alway change to benefit our brothers.
14). Brothers know us best.
There are no other people in the world that know us better than our brothers. Parents, guardians, significant others, and best friends all rank up there, but brothers truly know us best. They speak our language, know our likes and dislikes, and encourage us to be ourselves.
15). Brothers are forever.
No matter how far away they are or how long it has been since our last conversation, brothers will always be there for us. Having brothers means that we will always have someone there to support and encourage us.
